Spring Clean Your Health and Wellness
Believe it or not, it is already the month of September! Now's the time to get moving as we transition seasons. Here are seven hints to help you "spring into wellness”.
Wake early to exercise
The mornings are warming up, and spring means the sun rises earlier each day. So, take good advantage of this change. Get out and exercise before starting your day, whether it is going for a run or walking the dog. Exercising before work can begin your day on a high note with clarity and energy. Many of the activities above can be done with friends, family, and co-workers for mutual reinforcement. And it is not too early to start acquainting kids with some of these habits for a lifetime of healthy living.
Update your workout attire
Proper footwear can help support an active lifestyle by providing important support for your joints. Also, new lightweight clothing can help you manage heat and perspiration to optimize comfort when exercising. And be sure you are properly equipped before starting a new workout routine.
Swap your scenery
Most of us have been stuck indoors for the last few months. Take your afternoon lunch break outside or go for a leisurely walk after dinner. Use the fresh, warm air to energize you. Whether you walk or run, spending time in nature clears the mind, reduces stress, and can improve physical health. Stepping outside into the springtime weather can help switch your mindset to the exciting possibilities of a new season ahead.
Revitalize your daily fruits and vegetables
Spring is a great season to add new fruits and vegetables to your diet. Plan a trip to your local farmer’s market for some fresh, local produce. Whether you shop at the farmer’s market or stick to your local grocer, opt for fresh fruit and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats such as nuts and seeds.
Spring clean your kitchen
We all know springtime is a time for spring cleaning, but do not overlook some rooms of your home, such as the kitchen, that may be ignored. Ditch the canola and vegetable oil, toss canned goods that contain MSG, and say so long to sugars and processed foods. Do not forget your spices and seasonings, which are good for about one year.
Say "yes" to a healthy breakfast
It is a solid foundation and a great start for any day. And make sure to partner a morning exercise routine with a healthy breakfast. You will need the energy to make the most of your fitness regimen. Instead of coffee and a quick breakfast sandwich, how about a glass of orange juice and a grapefruit?
Start a “health food night”
Try a new healthy recipe at least one night each week. Hopefully, your favourite dishes will make it into your regular rotation of meals. The longer you do this, the easier it will be to cook healthy foods, and the healthier your diet will become overall.
Start carrying a water bottle with you
It is a lot easier to stay hydrated when you have the water right next to you. Drinking enough water every day is important for supporting your body’s natural functions, curbing cravings, and preventing dry, irritated skin. A glass of water can also be a good appetite suppressant and can help maintain a healthy weight. Try a squeeze of lemon in your water to add a bit of zest.
Proper sleeping habits help maintain a healthy weight
Strive to sleep 6-8 hours each night. Also, staying up late has been shown to increase the likelihood of overeating. Achieving proper rest will help reduce the opportunity to make bad diet decisions while preparing you for the demands of the next day.
Plant a small garden
Gardening is good for you in many ways. Gardening gives you exposure to sunlight, which is good for your mood and overall health. Gardening is also an exercise. If you live in an apartment, start a container garden on your balcony or join a community garden. Even just a short amount of time spent outside will be good for your health and your mood.
Make a wellness goal
Make just one wellness goal, and then devise a plan to make that goal happen. For example, you might resolve to lose 5kg by the end of the year. Write a plan that outlines the weight-loss activities you plan to engage in to make your goal happen. Set a timeline, then share your goal with a friend. Sharing your goal (and your plan to make it happen) will help you remain accountable. Many people resolve to take walks or go for runs regularly but fail in time. Walking or running with a partner will help you stay committed to your plan and goal. Make a standing appointment.
Flower power
Pick or buy a bouquet of fresh flowers for yourself. The sight of flowers can improve your mood and even help make you happy. The beautiful shades and hues of flowers can add a pop of colour to your home or office and ultimately brighten your day.
Spring is all about new life and new opportunities. Use this new season to make healthy changes, set new goals for yourself, and appreciate the magic and miracles of new beginnings.
