Clean the right surfaces to protect yourself against Covid-19
Among the things we don’t know about COVID-19 is how long the virus can survive outside of a human host. It certainly seems to have taught us to wash our hands regularly and thoroughly. To touch our face less often and cover our coughs and sneezes. However, we need to be aware of everyday items, particularly the ones we touch or pick up multiple times a day like your mobile phone! It’s filthy. Did you wash your hands and then touch that phone? Just like that, you’re re-contaminated!
Here’s some cleaning tips:
- Use the right product. Diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol and most common household disinfectants should be effective against the COVID-19 virus.
- Clean the right surfaces.
- High-touch areas such as door handles, phones, gate remote controls, TV remote controls, light switches, and bathroom fixtures.
- Wipe your phone, keys and other personal items every time you return home.
- Do not reuse disinfectant wipes on multiple surfaces. This can transfer germs from the used wipe to other surfaces. Use one wipe for each surface and then throw it out.
- Do not dry surfaces after wiping them down. Surfaces you are disinfecting need to stay wet for the amount of time listed on the label. The contact time with the disinfectant is what actually kills the germs.
- Instead of touching a button or door handle, place your sleeve of your shirt over your palm to press down, or using your elbow.
- Use a tissue or a disinfectant wipe to cover you finger when typing on the ATM keypad.
